چکیده

The indications for revascularization of the vertebral arteries are symptoms of vertebrobasilar insufficiency, namely, dizziness, visual disturbances, and confusion or coma. There is a great deal of variation from patient to patient in the severity of lesions causing symptoms . In some patients the degree of stenosis may be severe yet the patient may experience minimal or no symptoms; in others there appears to be adequate flow but profound symptoms are present. The lack of correlation between the degree of stenosis and the clinical manifestations is due to variations in collateral blood supply. The posterior fossa receives blood supply from the contralateral vertebral artery and from the carotid artery system through the posterior communicating arteries. Consequently, when assessing a patient with significant stenosis of a vertebral artery, the interventionist should determine the patency of the contralateral vertebral artery, whether the diseased vertebral artery is dominant, and the amount of blood supplied to the vertebrobasilar system by the carotid arteries. Effect of Heparin Administration during Coronary Angiography on Vascular or Peripheral Complications: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Background: Coronary angiography consists of the selective injection of contrast agents in coronary arteries. Optimal strategy for heparin administration during coronary angiography has yet to be determined. We assessed the effect of heparin administration during coronary angiography on vascular, hemorrhagic, and ischemic complications. Methods: Five hundred candiates for diagnostic coronary ang...

Angiography of the Aorta and Peripheral Arteries

Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease that afflicts millions of patients annually in the United States. Historically, most of the clinical focus has been on its coronary artery manifestations, given their frequency and the potentially grave consequences. While vascular medicine and vascular surgical specialists, however, have long recognized that peripheral (extracardiac) arterial occlusive dis...

The in vitro effect of Melissa officinalis aqueous extract on aortic reactivity in rats with subchronic diabetes

Abstract Background and Objective: Vascular abnormality and dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular disease in diabetic state. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether an in vitro exposure of endothelium-intact aortic rings to Melissa officinalis (lemon balm, MO) aqueous extract could have a beneficial effect in rats with subchronic diabetes. Materials and Meth...

Discriminant Analysis in Symptomatic Patients With Supra-Aortic and Peripheral Atherosclerosis

Background. Different patterns of risk factors might be related to the involvement of specific vascular districts by atherosclerosis. In this sense, many investigations have addressed coronary artery disease, whereas extracoronary atherosclerosis has received less extensive attention. Methods and Results. Vascular risk factors, with particular attention to lipid parameters (total cholesterol [T...

Stridor in a Newborn with Double Aortic Arch-A Case Report

Introduction: Double aortic arch (DAA) is a congenital anomaly of the aortic arch. It is the most common type of complete vascular ring. When it occurs, the connected segment of the aortic arch and its branches encircle the trachea and esophagus, leading to symptoms related to these two structures. Case Report: We present a case of a newborn baby who developed biphasic stridor immediately after...

Retrograde femoral arterial perfusion and stroke risk during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery: is there cause for concern?

Recent data have suggested that retrograde arterial perfusion (RAP) during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) is associated with a higher stroke rate than sternotomy approaches. To assess whether there is genuine cause for concern, we examine the strengths and weaknesses of this data. A multitude of confounding factors obfuscate interpretation of the data including imprecise defini...
